Persian Gulf National Day: A Symbol of Unity Sovereignty and Regional Cooperationon

Iran commemorates Persian Gulf National Day

Every year on April 30, Iran commemorates Persian Gulf National Day, marking the historic expulsion of Portuguese colonial forces from the Strait of Hormuz in 1622 by the Safavid navy. This day underscores Iran’s enduring sovereignty over the Persian Gulf and reaffirms the historical and cultural identity of this vital waterway.

The name "Persian Gulf" has been consistently recognized by historians, scholars, and international organizations, including the United Nations, as the historically accurate and legitimate designation. Despite periodic efforts by some regional actors to rename it, both historical documents and international consensus continue to uphold its rightful name.

More than a celebration of national pride, Persian Gulf National Day also reflects Iran’s call for constructive regional cooperation. Iran advocates for collective efforts to ensure peace, stability, and security throughout the Persian Gulf region, emphasizing dialogue and shared responsibility among neighboring states.

In addition to its geopolitical significance, the Persian Gulf is ecologically vital, home to rich marine biodiversity and fragile ecosystems. However, environmental challenges such as oil spills, industrial waste, and coastal degradation threaten its ecological balance. Iran acknowledges the urgent need for environmental protection and has expressed its willingness to work with other littoral states to promote sustainable development and safeguard the marine environment.

Nationwide observances, especially in coastal cities like Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, feature cultural festivals, academic seminars, and naval parades. These events celebrate Iran’s maritime heritage while promoting awareness of the region’s historical and ecological importance.

Persian Gulf National Day thus stands not only as a symbol of Iran’s historical resilience and sovereignty but also as a platform for promoting regional unity, environmental stewardship, and peaceful coexistence in one of the world’s most strategic waterways.
